Introduction

Welcome to the initial Beta stage of your new Plex.Earth 5!!

Our goal has always been to provide you with the insights and advantages of an eagle’s eye view, to help you design both swifter and smarter. That’s why last year we partnered with the best data providers out there, to bring you better imagery choices to cover all your needs.

The recent developments in the communication between Plex.Earth and Google Earth along with the high demand for Plex.Earth during the pandemic, meant we’ve done everything possible to make next year’s plans into a reality NOW. Plex.Earth 5 is the result!

We’re extremely happy to present it to you today as a working beta, and greatly appreciate your willingness to help us test it before full-scale deployment. So let’s look at the main differences between Plex.Earth 4 and Plex.Earth 5:

 

Imagery

This is where the biggest breakthroughs have been made, to get you the latest and clearest images available on the market!

Most importantly, Plex.Earth 5 introduces a host of new satellite and aerial imagery providers, including Nearmap, Maxar (Digitalglobe) and Hexagon. We tested these suppliers last year and they offer you more up-to-date and high-res imagery for your project areas.

Super-important- these providers give you full usage rights including the ability to print, distribute and create derivative work from your images. That means anything from internal photocopies to your company brochure is legally covered!

Images from these providers will be serviced via a credit system, for which detailed pricing will be provided soon.

Note that Bing Maps, OpenStreetMap and the embedded Map Explorer work exactly as you were used to in Plex.Earth 4. 

Image importing from Google Earth is no longer supported (Google’s decision) but you will have access to (temporary, single-tile and view-only) Google Maps images.

KML/KMZ Importing and Exporting

These functions don’t require a direct communication of Plex.Earth with Google Earth (during exports Plex.Earth creates the required files and these are then simply opened by Google Earth) so have been completely unaffected by recent developments. As such, they still work exactly as you were used to in Plex.Earth 4.

Georeference

Your old favorite georeference methods of previous versions are included in Plex.Earth 5 plus two NEW features: Your recently-used choices (which allows you to whizz through and pick any previous selection) and the much-awaited option to define a custom displacement, that will be used by all subsequent commands!

Synchronization

Synchronizing Google Earth is now done via a different method, with Plex.Earth generating a placemark that is then opened by Google Earth. You will see these new placemarks in Google Earth's Temporary Places. Synchronizing AutoCAD (based on the current view of Google Earth) is not currently possible, but will be introduced as an option later on.

Terrain

Terrain importing functions are very similar to those of Plex.Earth 4, with the main difference being that importing terrain data from Google is no longer available. The default terrain provider is now Bing Maps, but we also plan to include new premium terrain providers (like we did with imagery) in the near future, so stay tuned for that!

 


 

Remember that Plex.Earth 5 is completely independent of Plex.Earth 4, so you can work with both programs simultaneously.
